Kaduna 2023: The Muslim-Muslim ticket is an affront to the Christian community
By Noé Ebije, Kaduna
Stakeholders in Christian-dominated southern Kaduna have described the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kaduna State as an affront to the dignity of people in the area.
The state’s APC gubernatorial candidate, Senator Uba Sani, has had a penultimate week, Deputy Governor Nasir El-Rufai announced Hadiza Balarabe, a fellow Muslim as running mate for the 2023 gubernatorial election.
However, residents of mainly Christian southern Kaduna expressed shock at such a nomination, wondering if there was not a single Christian APC member from the area who was qualified to be a candidate for the the vice presidency of the APC, even though they trained the most educated, experienced, exposed and loyal party officials in the state.
It was even as Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Haliru Abdullahi Maraya said it is wrong for any Muslim to support a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2023 presidential election.
Maraya, who is the former special adviser to the late Governor Ibrahim Yakowa of Kaduna State for Islamic issues and Hajj, said such a joint note of faith is at odds with the spirit of justice that the Islam religion promotes and defends at all times.
“For a political party to have Muslims as its national president, presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate, such a party is indeed unable to say that it promotes and upholds the spirit of justice , justice and equity.”
But for Kaduna State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Reverend Joseph Hayab said political parties presenting same-faith tickets will not make Christians lose sleep over such insults and intimidation.
“Why would anyone care about a Muslim-Muslim ticket when there are multiple options and there are even Christian candidates in some political parties.
“Those who used to argue about 1993 or any previous election that presented a Muslim-Muslim ticket should know that times have changed.
“What I will say to Christians in Kaduna State is that there are several political parties, if one says they don’t need you go for another.
“The constitution stipulates that leadership in Nigeria should reflect the federal character to promote unity. Those who think they don’t need us, there’s no problem”.
Reacting to the Muslim-Muslim ticket, SOKAPU spokesperson, Mr. Luka Binniyat said, “Let me start by saying that SOKAPU is not partisan. But that does not mean that SOKAPU is not interested in the party that will bring good governance and move Kaduna State and Nigeria forward. This is why we inaugurated a political committee in May of this year for this purpose.
“Before now, SOKAPU Chairman Jonathan Asake has made it clear that any political party that fails to consider and respect, in particular, the religious and ethnic diversity of Kaduna State and Nigeria, our people must be mobilized to reject such a party in the 2023 elections.
“And that echoes the resentment of all right-thinking and fair-minded people in the state, including Muslims and Christians over this.
“In 2019, Governor Nasir El-Rufai appealed to a fellow Muslim in the person of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate to upset us Christians and declare that only Muslims can produce a Governor in Kaduna State.
But it is not a hidden fact that even the governor’s staunchest supporters believe that el-Rufai did not win the 2019 gubernatorial election despite the election tribunal result.
All fair residents of Kaduna State believe that el-Rufai could not have won the 2019 elections with his inhuman policies, tragic security situation and the introduction of strange all-Muslim tickets.
Kaduna State has a population of approximately 10.3 million divided evenly between its Muslim north and its Christian south, although the Christian side has 12 of the 23 LGAs in Kaduna State.
“The fact that Senator Uba Sani has always chosen the same Muslim-Muslim tick of el-Rufai confirms fears in southern Kaduna that the senator has no intention of reconciliation with southern Kaduna if elected. .
“It is also to confirm that el-Rufai’s exclusive, discriminatory and biased policies towards the people of southern Kaduna would be maintained, if not worsened, when Uba Sani is elected governor.
The Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC in Kaduna State is an affront to the dignity of the inhabitants of southern Kaduna who are predominantly Christians.
“This means that no Christian APC member from South Kaduna is qualified to be a candidate for APC Vice President, even though they are the most educated, experienced, exposed and loyal spectrum. of APC in the state.
“It is the kind of disrespect to sensibilities and insult to the collective well-being of southern Kaduna that we had to endure during the horrific years of APC under Nasir el-Rufai.
“The outcome of such a CPA mishap will surely be clarified in the 2023 election. And the joy is that our people, as in the past, will do everything legally possible to defend our votes against any predatory party. In a nutshell, SOKAPU rejects the Muslim-Muslim APC ticket in Kaduna State.”
