Anderson First Christian Church Offers ‘Box of Blessings’

PINEVILLE – First Christian Church, located in Anderson, offers a “blessings box” for community members. The box, which currently contains diapers and non-perishable food, has been donated by the church for five years.

Whitney Phillips, pastor at First Christian Church, said the box was replenished with donations. Phillips said she donated to the box, organized donations and tried to let the community know what the box has to offer.

Phillips said there was no limit to what community members can take with them and that she, alongside other church members, wanted to serve the community with the box.

“The people within the community, and even sometimes myself, we all need a little help here and there,” Phillips said. “I have kids, and they were babies, and I know how difficult it can be. So with diapers I know it can be a huge blessing.”

Phillips said the box often contains non-perishable foods such as pasta, beans and other canned foods. Phillips noted that while the Blessings Box currently contains layers, additional items are given more randomly than food.

John Allison, a member of the First Christian Church, started the “box of blessings,” alongside other church members five years ago. Allison said they started the box as the church received various food donations and wanted to share the donations with members of the community.

“Most of the time, we just put non-perishable food in there,” Allison said. “People in the community, they just come to get food, whatever we have, and they’re welcome.”

Allison said church members, community members and local businesses have donated food to the “Box of Blessings,” even offering frozen foods in the box in the winter.

“Our main focus is to help people with food,” Allison said. “We had an abundance of food, we didn’t want to throw anything away, it’s something we don’t want to do, and so it’s a way for us to put it out there and give it to whoever passes by. community.”

Phillips said anyone can donate to the “Box of Blessings, and community members can place food directly into the box if they wish to donate. All non-perishable and non-perishable foods , except those in glass containers, may be donated.

Any member of the community can shop in the “blessings box” located outside the first Christian church.
