Boulevard Christian Church will host a gift of school clothes | Lifestyles

Parents looking for school clothes for their kids can get a little fashion help at the Boulevard Christian Church clothing contest on August 14.

“We take clothes for the younger ones and make outfits,” said Marcia Gideon, gift coordinator. “We take the shorts and pants and a shirt, find them and say what they are on a sticky little note.”

The church will host their giveaway from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 14 as part of the Our Kids Better Together sartorial event this month. LifePoint Church will be hosting a shoe giveaway from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 21.

The clothing contest will feature free, lightly worn clothing from size 4 to adult, Gideon said.

“We don’t charge anything for entering and making purchases, we require buyers to fill out a registration form,” Gideon said. “If they want to give back to our community, we’ll have a table with representatives from the Muskogee Community Food Pantry. We will accept donations of cash or non-perishable food.

The church is looking to help at least 200 families this year, she said. “Depending on the number of children in each, there are between 200 and 500 children.”

Pairing pants with tops makes it easier for parents, Gideon said. She said they wanted things to match.

“When they come to shop we found out that was what they were doing,” she said. “They say, ‘I have a shirt, I need pants to go with it.’ They want a complete outfit. “

Boulevard and LifePoint hosted a Better Together Back to School event at Muskogee Civic Center in August 2019. Each had held separate clothing and shoe drives in previous years. The joint event did not take place in 2020 due to concerns over COVID-19.

Gideon said Boulevard continues to work with the LifePoint shoe giveaway, and vice versa.

“We just don’t do it in the same place at the same time because we didn’t feel comfortable putting a mass of people in the Civic Center because of the COVID precautions,” she said. “We should have booked the Civic Center a while ago, and you know with COVID, you can’t plan too much for the future. You don’t know what it’s going to look like.”

Other churches and organizations are also helping.

“The Timothy Baptist Church is really supporting the sartorial event this year,” Gideon said. “We’ll have volunteers from Timothy. They’ve collected clothes, helped sort out. They’re also donating money to him.”

The Boy Scouts and Cubs will also help with the gift, she said.

The church works year round to collect clothes, Gideon said. Donations are accepted after the draw. Volunteers also come to Goodwill to buy pants for little boys.
