Blood drive to be held at Pineville Christian Church on August 20
PINEVILLE, Mo. – The Ozarks Community Blood Center will be holding a blood drive at Pineville Christian Church from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on August 20, going beyond normal collection times in hopes of get more donors.
The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks has launched an emergency appeal for all blood groups, with hospital transfusions this summer being the highest since 2017.
Janice Bearbower, the McDonald County blood drive contact for the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, said the goal of the blood drive was to get 35 blood donors, five more than the number of donors during the June collection. Bearbower said at the June drive that 30 donors have surpassed the goal she previously set, so she’s hoping the community can beat her monthly goal again.
Bearbower said that with the rise of covid-19, the need for donors continues to grow.
“When covid is on the rise, there is a huge need for blood in hospitals right now,” Bearbower said. “You could save a life. You could literally save the life of your neighbor or a member of your family by having that blood available to them.”
Bearbower said one of the reasons people don’t donate is due to misinformation and potential donors who think they aren’t eligible. Bearbower added that many people with cancer, diabetes or high blood pressure think they are automatically excluded from donating, which is not always true. Bearbower encourages everyone to call and see if they can donate as donation guidelines change frequently, and a representative from the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks can help individuals find out if they are eligible to donate blood. .
On August 20, refreshments will be served to all donors, as well as donors participating in a contest. Those interested in donating can pre-register to donate online, which will make the donation process faster and more convenient when the donor arrives.
